Interpersonal and social skills are often referred to as ‘soft skills’, ‘people skills’ or ‘emotional intelligence’.

These skills flavour all relationships in our lives, including relationships with family, friends and work colleagues. Although our ‘people skills’ have substantial impacts on the quality of our interactions, they are often skills that we don’t reflect on or discuss. Others will generally avoid giving us direct feedback regarding our interpersonal skills due to the sensitivity of the topic. Although this is understandable, the lack of feedback can result in us remaining unaware of what the problem might be. Consequently, relational issues can persist.

It can be difficult to identify and isolate those mannerisms or interactional behaviours that might be problematic. Amanda can assist you in identifying areas that you might be finding difficult and will then work with you to explore the components of the skill and how to establish it in your social repertoire.

Skills covered can include:

R

conversational skills

R

assertive communication with others

R

nonverbal communication and body language

R

strategies for building new friendships and deepening your current social circles

R

effective communication in conflict

R

developing specific social skills such as reading social cues, social repairs, prosocial abilities and group participation skills

Generally, therapy is short-term in nature. It can be particularly helpful for those who have experienced social anxiety, shyness, childhood peer relationship struggles, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, alongside anyone who is wanting to further develop their interactional social abilities.
