Social interaction is often talked about using terms like “people skills” or “emotional intelligence” yet much of how we relate to others happens automatically and without much opportunity to pause or reflect.

Many adults notice patterns repeating across friendships, family relationships or workplaces without being sure why things keep feeling difficult or draining. Feedback is rarely offered clearly which can make it hard to work out what is going on or what might help.

At Connect at York, sessions focus on making sense of real interactions. Together we look at everyday situations, notice patterns and explore how different ways of responding can shift how an interaction feels. The aim is not to change who you are but to understand what supports connection to feel more comfortable and more sustainable for you.

Sessions are practical and collaborative. They involve reflecting, trying things out and making small purposeful adjustments where this feels helpful. The focus is on finding approaches that make sense in your real life rather than following fixed rules or scripts.

This work supports adults for whom social interaction is more effortful and requires greater awareness or recovery. This includes many neurodivergent adults and others who experience differences in how they communicate, connect and manage social situations. The focus is on understanding these interaction differences and finding approaches to connection that feel genuine and sustainable
